In June 2026, the hacker group ShinyHunters is reported to have targeted the University of Nottingham, publishing dozens of gigabytes of data online.
What data was exposed?
The breach concerns current students and alumni information, including but not limited to personal information such as names, addresses, financial information, ethnicities, gender, disabilities, dates of birth, passport numbers, and national insurance numbers of both current students and alumni.
Passports numbers have also been exposed. Cybersecurity experts say affected individuals should be “quite worried,” as passport numbers can be used for identity verification. Their exposure therefore elevates the risk of identity theft.
What has the University of Nottingham said?
The University of Nottingham has stated, “We know this information is likely to cause concern for students and staff in our community and we apologise for any anxiety that this may cause” and has also offered a dedicated support line for those affected.
